We find out as the credits roll that Faye is also known as Laufey (Lau, see?) Laufey is a jotunn (giant), mother of Loki, and wife of fellow jotunn Farbauti in Norse mythos.

Let’s jump ahead a few moments to the reveal that the name Atreus was given to the boy in honor of a brave and kind Spartan that Kratos knew back in Greece. But what is coming out of Atreus' mouth? Does the boy cause Kratos’ death? Is the cycle of a son murdering his father truly not broken? Is it simply Atreus hearing Kratos' final words? And why is Kratos so content with this ominous image? Unfortunately, we don't have answers for this. It appears as if Kratos is dying, with his son close by. Ok Kratos alone sees this final, hidden pane, which is open to a bit of interpretation. As Kratos says, he wasn’t the only parent keeping a secret.Īfter Atreus leaves the temple, Kratos watches as a curtain blows back, revealing that the mural also shows the future. Remember, Giants are known for their ability to see the future. From the first time Kratos and Atreus met The World Serpent, to their fight with Baldur - Atreus entire life is displayed on the wall.įaye was a Giant, meaning that Atreus is part Greek God, and part Giant.

A mural, that shows their past, present, and future, all playing out at once. Suddenly the walls give way to reveal an intricate mural that leads to a startling revelation. The pair make it to a temple that the giants constructed after leaving Midgard. He also finally allows Atreus to carry Faye’s ashes up the final stretch of the mountain, showing just how far these two characters have come.

With Baldur out of the way and Freya rightfully pissed off, our heroes are finally free to use the Bifrost to travel to Jotunheim (with a bit of unconventional help from Mimir).Īs the pair make their way up to the highest peak, Kratos unwraps the bandages around his wrists, finally making peace with the ghosts of his past. While Kratos and Atreus view this act as necessary, Freya watches her son die in horror, and vows to exact revenge in this incredible monologue which proves that hell hath no fury like a mother scorned. This weakness allowed Kratos to snap Baldur’s neck and finally put an end his madness. This killed Baldur instantly, the first sign of Ragnorak. It was Loki who sought the mistletoe, formed an arrow from its branch, and gave to Baldur's blind brother Hother to unknowingly throw at Baldur with the rest of the gods as they tested his invulnerability. She only did not ask a mistletoe plant, seeing it as either too young, or inconsequential. God of War's Freya seems to follow the theory that Frigg and Freya are one in the same.) asked for everything in existance to pledge an oath to never harm Baldur. Combat-wise, the game does a really good job at building up to the more intense combat, not relying on any combat expertise from the previous games. In Norse mythology, Freya (sometimes synonymous with Frigg. The game also has an over-the shoulder camera, which allows for slower, more grounded gameplay. Firstly, Kratos’ main weapon is an axe, which handles completely differently to his Chain Blades. The combat in the new God of War is also quite different to any of the previous games. Well, the writers have also done a brilliant job in the sense that his son knows nothing about Kratos’ past, which means that Kratos recounts key moments throughout his days in Greece as the game goes on. His son is quite knowledgeable (thanks to his mother) which means that his son has to teach him a lot about this world. In our review we mentioned that Kratos doesn’t know a whole lot about Norse mythology. The game does a really good job at slowly introducing you to Kratos’ previous major encounters. He has a new family and is battling it out in a brand new world, with new enemies and bosses, and the game’s premise is extremely different (and has nothing to do with) any of the other games.
#WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN GOD OF WAR 3 AND 4 SERIES#
There’s obviously some throwbacks to previous games in the series throughout the story, but this is a brand new Kratos. I’d be lying if I said that there was no mention of events that happened in the former games.

Now, obviously I don’t want to spoil anything about the story. Now, this isn’t a silly assumption to make considering there’s been six God of War games this far on console/handheld, but I’m here to tell you why it doesn’t matter in the slightest if you haven’t played a previous God of War game both from a story aspect as well as from a gameplay perspective. The main question that I’ve seen people asking about the new God Of War game is in relation to needing to play the previous games in order to understand (and enjoy this one).
